About Tactile Indicators

What are Tactile Indicators (TGSIs)?

Tactiles are designed to ensure Australians who are blind or vision impaired can safely and confidently navigate our cities by providing physical clues on the ground. Tactiles (TGSI) provide both hazard (warning) and directional guidance. The use and installation of TGSI in Australia and New Zealand are governed by AS/NZ1428 — Design for access and mobility.

1428 defines a variety of criteria including the luminance contrast to the surface, size and shape, tactile layout and the minimum distance between the tactiles and any potential danger. The width of stair nosings is also covered.

Safety & Civil Supply Co. offers a wide range of standards-compliant indicators suitable for most substrates. Our range of tactiles includes individual plastic and 316 SS studs, integrated self-adhesive polyurethane and rubber matting in both formats. All TGSI and nosing products must also meet AS 4586 — which sets minimum requirements for slip resistance.

Tactile Indicator Solutions

Tactile indicator studs – Our tactile indicator studs provide essential anti-slip guidance for pedestrians, ensuring safe navigation in public spaces. They are AS/NZ 1428 compliant and serve as individual hazard and directional indicators to assist visually impaired pedestrians in identifying changes in terrain.

We offer stainless steel, brass and polymer tactile indicators, all suitable for internal and external applications, including car parks, footpaths and shopping centres. Their durable construction and easy application ensure long-lasting tactile guidance across various surface types.

Tactile tiles and pads – Tactile tiles and pads provide expansive guidance for visually impaired pedestrians, making them ideal for high-traffic areas such as entryways, platform edges and public walkways whilst compliant with AS/NZ 1428 standards. They offer anti-slip properties to enhance safety in both internal and external environments.

Available in rubber, polymer, stainless steel and porcelain, these tactile indicator tiles and pads come in hazard and directional profiles to suit different applications. A self-adhesive option allows for immediate walkover use, providing a cost-effective solution for larger areas while ensuring long-lasting tactile guidance and accessibility.

Installation tools – Behind every effective tactile system is the use of reliable installation tools and materials. These tools ensure accurate placement and secure installation for long-term reliability. We offer adhesives, application equipment and positioning aids to streamline the process and support implementation.
